1. When did you decide to become a doctor?

I started thinking about becoming a doctor in high school after I really enjoyed my biology and anatomy and physiology classes. I went into college as a Molecular Cell Biology major and decided that I wanted to pursue medicine.

2. Did you participate in any sports while studying at CCA? Did you have a favorite club at school?

I didn’t participate in any sports at CCA and I wasn’t involved in very many clubs, but I did speech and debate for a couple of years in high school.

3. If you could go back to high school, would you choose Torrey Pines instead of CCA?  What would you improve about yourself? What advice would you give to yourself?

If I could go back to high school I would still choose CCA. I think it was a good experience and the high school you go to doesn’t really matter as long as you’re happy. I don’t think there is much that I would improve about myself since life is about making mistakes and growing.

Some advice I would give myself is to make sure you’re enjoying life and not putting too much pressure and stress on yourself because you want to go to medical school. In the end, everything will work out, and if you really want to go to medical school, you will get there. You’re only young once, and you should travel, hang out with friends, and experience life whenever you can. Also, make sure you’re practicing healthy habits, eating well, and exercising because that will help your mental and physical wellbeing for the future.

4. When did Lab Research start in college? When did medical shadowing start? How can I contact a doctor for medical shadowing? Is a Gap year necessary?

I started doing research sophomore year of college but you can start any time. I took freshman year to get used to college and join some clubs before starting research.

Finding a doctor to shadow can be difficult, but it really helps if you have connections. If you know anyone who is a doctor, you can get connected with doctors to shadow through them. If you don’t have any connections, you may need to find doctors online and contact them to ask if you can shadow. If your undergrad has a medical school connected to it, it may be easier to find people to shadow. You don’t need to spend hundreds of hours shadowing, so it is not something you have to be doing regularly and there is no real timeline for it. Medical schools just want to see that you have seen what doctors do and that you know what it means to be a doctor.

I took one gap year, and I would recommend taking at least one gap year. You apply to medical school starting in June and interviews start around the beginning of September, so if you don’t take a gap year, that means you would be interviewing during senior year of college. Since interviews are online now, it is more doable; however, it still is difficult to apply while going to school. I think it is good to get real world experience and a break from school before starting the long journey that is medical school.

5. What was the most important thing you learned from high school?

I learned how to study, which is basic but incredibly important for undergrad and medical school. The material you’re expected to read, understand, and internalize increases exponentially in undergrad and even further in medical school. Building good study habits in highschool will help you succeed in the future.

6. I want to apply for medical school, do you have any suggestions for high school courses and college majors? (May use family doctor as an example)

High school courses don’t really matter for medical school, but if you are interested, you might want to take the science courses such as anatomy and physiology, AP Bio, AP Chem and AP physics.

College majors don’t matter for medical school either as long as you are completing the required courses (such as general chemistry, organic chemistry, calculus, statistics, physics, and biochem). You can major in anything as long as you take those courses. Some people find it easier to major in biology since those courses are built into the major, but if you have a passion for something else, it’s completely fine to major in something not related to science. Another thing to consider is grades, and if you major in something that is too difficult, that can impact your GPA, which is important for medical school.

7. If I want to be a doctor, what type of university should I choose as my undergraduate school? Big public university or small private university?

I went to UC Berkeley, which is a big public university that is also known to be difficult. I think there are pros and cons; however, generally, small private universities give students more support and it can be easier to get a better GPA because of this. The small universities also have premed advisors that can really help with applying to medical school as well.  Classes are also much smaller, so you can get more individualized teaching compared to the 200+ people classes at large public universities. Large public universities do not have as much support and it is very difficult to get to know professors because there are so many students in each class. Even with these differences, I don’t think it makes a huge impact on medical school, and all of my friends who wanted to go to medical school in Berkeley are now in medical school. One thing to consider is tuition, because public school is obviously much cheaper than private school, and if you want to go to medical school, you are signing up for 4 more years of very expensive tuition. If you love a school, then in the end, you should go where you would be the happiest. Another important piece of information is that for medical school, the prestige of your undergrad is not a huge factor that is considered, so it’s okay if you don’t attend the highest ranked universities. The most important things are your GPA (which may be higher at less competitive schools), your MCAT, and your extracurriculars.

8. When you were at CCA, did you have favorite teachers? How did you deal with those teachers you disliked?

I didn’t really have any favorite teachers, but I remember some teachers who were very nice and helpful. I don’t remember if I had any teachers I particularly disliked; however, I would say that it is important to separate the teacher from whatever class they are teaching. Sometimes it is easy to dislike a subject because of the teacher, but you should keep an open mind because it might be something you’ll really love in the future. If you have serious problems with teachers, make sure you talk to someone who can help you figure out these issues.

9. During high school, how did you balance school and extracurricular activities? Do you remember what your schedule looked like?

I don’t really remember everything I did in high school, but I remember I did speech and debate, and I had an internship at Scripps Research Institute Junior year of high school. I took the internship class, so I had a period off to go to my internship. For balancing school and extracurriculars, make sure you are not taking on too many things that you can’t handle, because this would either impact your grades or your extracurriculars. You want to do well in school but also contribute meaningfully to whatever extracurriculars you may be involved in. It’s okay to take a step back if you realize you can’t handle everything.

最重要的是你的GPA(在竞争性较低的学校可能更高),你的MCAT和你的课外活动。
